Course Details
This four year part time training leads to an MSc. in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy after year 2. It leads to a professional accreditation as a child psychotherapist on completion of all clinical components.
Graduates are eligible to work with children in a variety of mental health settings. QUALIFICATION The MSc in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy is awarded by TCD on successful completion of the academic components in the first two years. On successful completion of years 3 and 4 a Diploma in Clinical Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy will be awarded by IICAPP. |

Course ComponentsInfant Observation
This unique experience involves the observation of a baby in an ordinary home setting for a period of up to 2 years, for 1 hour per week and attendance at a weekly infant observation seminar. The purpose of the seminar is to discuss and make sense of the observation, learn about very early development and relationships and to provide the framework for psychoanalytic psychotherapy technique. Personal Therapy
Students are required to undergo personal psychoanalytic psychotherapy with an approved training psychoanalytic psychotherapist – at least once weekly in years 1 and 2 but thereafter twice weekly until all clinical components are completed. A list of approved training psychoanalytic psychotherapists may be obtained from the course administrator. Theoretical Seminars
The work of the major psychoanalytic theorists is covered with particular reference to Freud, Klein and the Independent tradition. Clinical Seminars
Assessment and treatment issues, such as technique and application of theoretical concepts and therapy in specialist settings are dealt with in lecture and discussion format. Supervised Clinical Work
In years 3 and 4, students are expected to treat a minimum of 4 clients, children and adolescents, at different stages of development a minimum of 400 practice hours are required. Students are also required to attend weekly supervision up to 90 hours minimum. They are also required to attend group supervision on training days for up to 60 hours. Assessment
For years 1 & 2 students are required to submit semester essays, a major infant observation paper and a thesis. Assessment for years 3 & 4 is on a continuous basis and will be by supervisors’ evaluation reports and student involvement in monthly seminars and case presentations. |
