What is Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy?
Child and adolescent psychoanalytic psychotherapy is a clinical approach to therapeutic work with children-from infancy to adolescence- experiencing a range of emotional, mental health and relationship difficulties. It is rooted in psychoanalytic theory and emphasises the significance of early childhood experiences and relationships and their impact on the internal world of the child

From a theoretical perspective, child and adolescent psychoanalytic psychotherapy draws significantly on the work of Sigmund Freud, Melanie Klein, Anna Freud and other theorists including Wilfred Bion and Donald Winnicott.

These theorists have contributed to the current psychoanalytic understanding of the development of the child’s mind and the significance of the parent-infant relationship in the development of the child’s internal world. Concepts such as ‘containment’ (Bion, 1969b) and ‘holding’ (Winnicott, 1963) ground the clinical work, with an emphasis on the therapist’s capacity for attention and observation, reflection and thinking rather than acting.
Child psychotherapists also work with parents and families and contribute within clinical settings to the multidisciplinary understanding of the individual child’s experiences. Child psychotherapists work in a variety of settings including Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, Early Intervention Teams, paediatric settings, with children in care or other children who have experienced trauma or abuse and in private practice.

They are primarily involved in the assessment and treatment of children and their families through long-term individual psychotherapy or briefer interventions when appropriate. Further areas of clinical practice include under-fives work and the promotion of infant mental health. Child psychotherapists also engage in supervision, teaching, and work with other agencies such as social services and in education.

The Training Experience

The training offered by the Irish Institute for Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, in conjunction with the University of Dublin, Trinity College, reflects an integrated approach, with theory and practice closely linked, providing a comprehensive conceptual and critical understanding of the theoretical basis of psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
